I have read the story over the years a number of times, and it still reads like a Vietnam war story, which doesn't mean that it takes away any of its universality, reagrading the themes of surrender, possession, freedom, vice.

As far as the weaponry is concerned, this enumerating, almost trivial reading tactic, is a distinquished stylistic feature - can anyone remember what it is called?

It serves the purpose to add color and detail to the masculinity of depicitons.

Filip and dimitrius, I do appologize for accidentally trashing your comment (I clicked on the wrong icon!). Their question went towards enquiring whether the story could be read as simply a Vietnam War story, or if it could apply to any war, anywhere?

Concerning the last post, by istok, do you find that the detailed descriptions are taking you further and further away from the issue at hand? Do you find them annoying or?
